Questions and Answers

Q. What type of children does ChildrenFIRST serve?

A. ChildrenFIRST serves children who have been through abuse and neglect. These children range in age from birth to 17 years. Children who have been through abuse and neglect sometimes have emotional, developmental, medical or behavioral needs. Our agency trains families to be prepared to parent these special needs.

Q. Can a single person be a foster or adoptive parent?

A. Absolutely! We are looking for stable people capable of caring for children and working with families. ChildrenFIRST will work with any potential foster parent, single or otherwise, to ensure that there are ample support systems in place.

Q. Can a person adopt a child through ChildrenFIRST?

A. Yes! While we work with biological family to help reunify children whenever possible, sometimes a child is unable to be reunified with biological family and needs a forever family. There are various options to adopt children through foster care.

Q.  What is the cost to become a foster family?

A. While there is no fee to become a foster family, there are a few minor expenses you may incur throughout the licensing process.  ChildrenFIRST offers ALL required training through our agency free of charge.

Q.  How long does it take to become a licensed foster family?

A. This answer depends on you! ChildrenFIRST is pleased to offer individualized training schedules to work with each family based on their needs.  However, there is paperwork that a potential family must fill out and return before further steps can be taken.  The faster paperwork is returned, the faster we can move forward! The average time line is 3 months – 9 months.

Q. What is the first step to becoming a foster or adoptive family?

A. The first step is to contact us! Our staff will send you an application and a consent to do a background check. You can also download these from our website on the “application and forms” page.  Once these items are back to our office, we will contact you and work to schedule a time to meet and answer all your questions while providing some information about our agency.  ChildrenFIRST prides itself in being able to walk with our families through every step of this process.  We are always available for any questions or concerns you may have!
